Telangana State Icons-Symbols

Telangana, the 29th state of India was formed in June 2014, with Hyderabad as its capital. The state was formed as a result of the split of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh state.

Telangana is surrounded by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in the North, Karnataka in the West and Andhra Pradesh in the South and East directions. Major cities of the state include Hyderabad, Warangal, Nizamabad and Karimnagar.

The state government of Telangana has announced the official state icons: Telangana State official Animal, Telangana State official bird, Telangana State official Tree, Telangana State official Flower.

The official Icons Of Telangana State Are As Follows:

Telangana State Bird: Pala Pitta (Indian Roller or Blue Jay)

Telangana State Animal: Jinka (Deer)

Telangana State Tree: Jammi Chettu (Prosopis Cineraria)

Telangana State Flower: Tangedu Puvvu-Flower (Tanner’s Cassia)

All the 4 icons reflects the the culture and tradition of Telangana state where

Tangedu Puvvu-Flowers : Tangedu Flowers are used during the ‘Batukamma’ festival by women folk, and is the best choice as the Telangana state flower. Batukamma is one of the major festival celebrated by women in Telangana state.

Palapitta : There is story that Lord Rama spotted the ‘Palapitta’ before capturing Lanka and defeated Ravana. so ‘Palapitta’ has been chosen as Telangana State Bird on the path of victory. Local name of Indian roller – Palapitta is Neelkanth (meaning “blue throat”), a name associated with the deity Shiva (who drank poison resulting in the blue throat).

Jammi Chettu : There is story that Pandavas had defeated Kauravas only after performing prayers to this tree-Jammi Chettu. Telangana people do prayers to Jammi Chettu on Dasara-Dussehra with full devotion, as a part of culture Jammi Chettu has been chosen as Telangana State Tree.

Jinka : Deer – Krishna Jinka is referred as a graceful animal and it can survive anywhere. It reflects the mindset of the people of Telangana as it is very sensitive and innocent, so Deer has been chosen as Telangana State Animal.
